Brick Calculator
Enter your wall dimensions, brick size, mortar joint width, and a waste allowance to find how many bricks to buy.
How brick quantity is calculated
Wall area is length × height. Each brick's footprint includes the mortar joint around it, so the effective brick size used for the calculation is the brick's length and height plus the joint thickness on each dimension.
Dividing the wall area by this effective brick area gives the exact number of bricks needed, before adding a waste allowance (commonly 5-10%) to cover cutting, breakage, and corners, then rounding up to a whole number of bricks.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the mortar joint matter for brick count?
Mortar joints add a small gap around every brick, so a wall built with thicker joints needs slightly fewer bricks to cover the same area than one with thin joints — ignoring the joint would overestimate how many bricks fit.
How much extra should I buy for waste?
5-10% is typical for a straightforward wall; corners, openings (doors, windows), and complex bonds typically need more, since they generate more cut bricks.
Does this calculator account for door and window openings?
No — it assumes a solid wall. Subtract the area of any openings from your wall area (or enter the wall's net area directly) for a more precise count.
