How retaining wall materials are estimated

This calculator converts your wall's length and height to inches, then divides by the block's width and height to find how many blocks fit in one row and how many rows are needed to reach the target wall height, rounding up each time since partial blocks still require a full block.

This gives a straightforward material estimate assuming a simple stacked, non-tapered wall. Real retaining walls often need a stepped-back (battered) face for stability, base course preparation, drainage gravel, and corner/cap blocks — budget extra material beyond this raw block count for a real project.

Frequently asked questions

Does this account for corner blocks or caps?

No — this gives a straightforward count of standard wall blocks based on area. Corner units, cap blocks, and any decorative finishing pieces should be added separately, since they're usually different products from the standard wall block.

Why does it round up the rows and blocks per row?

You can't buy a partial block — if your wall height requires 5.2 rows, you still need to buy and place 6 full rows (with the top row potentially trimmed), so the calculator always rounds up to whole blocks.

Should I order extra blocks beyond this estimate?

Yes — it's standard practice to order 5–10% extra to account for cuts, breakage, and mistakes, especially for any wall with curves or that isn't a simple straight run.
