Fraction Calculator
Enter two fractions and an operation to get the simplified result and its decimal equivalent.
How fraction arithmetic works
To add or subtract fractions, first give them a common denominator, then add or subtract the numerators. To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal (flip the numerator and denominator).
The result is automatically simplified by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD), so you always get the fraction in its lowest terms.
Frequently asked questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Convert both fractions to a common denominator (usually the product of the two denominators, or their least common multiple), then add the numerators and keep the common denominator.
How do you divide fractions?
Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second — flip the second fraction's numerator and denominator, then multiply straight across.
Why is my result simplified to a whole number?
If the simplified numerator and denominator share no common factors other than 1 and the denominator reduces to 1, the fraction is mathematically equal to a whole number, so that's what's shown.
