How the midpoint formula works

The midpoint of two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is found by averaging each coordinate separately: midpoint = ((x1+x2)/2, (y1+y2)/2).

This works because averaging finds the value exactly in between two numbers — applying that to both the x and y coordinates independently gives the point that sits exactly halfway along the straight line connecting the two original points.

Frequently asked questions

Is the midpoint always exactly on the line between the two points?

Yes — the midpoint always lies exactly on the straight line segment connecting the two points, at precisely the halfway point.

Does it matter which point I enter first?

No — since the formula just averages the x-values and averages the y-values, swapping point 1 and point 2 gives the exact same midpoint.

How is the midpoint formula related to finding an average?

The midpoint formula is literally the average (arithmetic mean) applied separately to the x-coordinates and the y-coordinates of the two points.
