Volume of Shapes Calculator
Choose a 3D shape and enter its dimensions to find its volume.
Volume formulas for common 3D shapes
Cube: side³. Rectangular box: length × width × height. Cylinder: π × radius² × height. Sphere: (4/3) × π × radius³. Cone: (1/3) × π × radius² × height.
These formulas measure the three-dimensional space enclosed by the shape, in whatever cubed unit your inputs are in (e.g. entering centimeters gives a volume in cubic centimeters).
Frequently asked questions
Why is a cone's volume one-third of a cylinder's?
A cone with the same base radius and height as a cylinder fits exactly three times inside it — this is a geometric fact provable with calculus, which is why the cone's volume formula has the extra 1/3 factor.
How is a sphere's volume related to its radius?
Sphere volume grows with the cube of the radius — doubling the radius increases the volume by a factor of 8 (2³), not just 2.
What's the difference between volume and surface area?
Volume measures the three-dimensional space a shape encloses (in cubic units); surface area measures the total area of its outer surface (in square units) — they're different measurements answering different questions.
